It is FINALLY done!!

I think I missed the story by a couple of hours, but ESPN (among other outlets) is reporting that Joe Mauer has struck a deal with the Twins that will keep him a Twin through the 2018 season. The deal is HUGE, reportedly worth 8-years and $184M dollars, BY FAR the largest contract that Twins have ever given out and, actually, 4th largest in Major League Baseball history.

Thoughts?

I've talked about this issue numerous times on this blog, my feelings on the Mauer situation have been pretty well laid out. I just have to say, as a fan, "Thank You" to the Twins organization for giving us fans hope and for making a solid, but in some ways risky, investment. I am excited about not only this upcoming season, but I have reason to be hopeful for years to come with Mauer, Morneau, D-Span, Blackburn, etc all locked up for a few years more.

I think all of us Twins fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief now...oh, and also we can go back to trusting the likes of Mark Rosen and Joe Christensen again.

  1. Still don't see the need to lock up Blackburn. That said, its about time!

  2. i guess my point in saying that (about Blackburn) was more that they have some continuity going over the next several years and seem to have identified a core group.

  3. yeah, i mean i wouldn't say the span or blackburn deals were "bad" by any means, and it is nice to have some continuity there, they just won't likely provide much cost savings over year-by-year arbitration raises. that said, it's a good time to be a Twins fan right now, despite nathan (nathen?) having TJ. For as much crap as Bill Smith has taken over the past few years, you really have to give it up for the front office at this point.
